Should You Hire a Crane or Buy New?

Should You Hire a Crane or Buy New?

Almost any urban construction project needs a tower crane, and certainly, any construction business can benefit from it. Tower cranes can help carry heavy loads, they reduce the need for other material handling vehicles and therefore increase the safety of your workers.

However, tower cranes are also quite expensive, and you should give it some thought on whether hiring a crane or buying a new one is the best option for your construction business. At RCB Operators you can find both options, and hopefully, this post will give you enough information to decide.

Things to Consider When Hiring a Crane (or Buying It)

The first step is thinking about the type of crane your business needs. There are two most distinct types, a tower crane and a mobile crane.

Mobile cranes, also called crawlers, are mounted on a truck and they can move around the construction site changing the position as needed. A big advantage they offer is the deployment speed, exactly because of their mobility, they can be on-site quite quickly.

Also, you can find small mobile cranes that fit in a small truck and enormous versions fit for your heaviest loads.

Then we have tower cranes, static material handling equipment that has to be installed on-site. Tower cranes are what you see in most large construction projects, especially in urban and rural areas. They are also the preferred choice for low-rise residential buildings.

Which crane you will get depends only on your business needs, but another factor you have to consider is how often do you plan to use it?

Hire or Buy a Crane?

If you are expecting many projects where you need a crane, then buying one might be your best option. But other than the equipment’s price, you also have to consider storage space, maintenance, and service. However, if you maintain and store it properly, you can expect it to last for at least 25 years.

Also, you should only buy from a reputable dealer, and if you are a little short on budget, you might find a few used ones from other construction companies. Though this is not what we truly advise because you can never know how well they were stored and maintained!

On the other hand, if you only have one or two projects that require a crane, you will be better of with renting it. This will save you a lot of funding on the crane’s price and you won’t have to worry about maintenance or storage.
